Postponed cup clash eases pressure

Airdrie's Scottish Cup third-round replay against Beith, which had been due to be refereed by Maltese officials, has been postponed because of overnight snow.

Beith's Bellsdale Park failed a 9.30am pitch inspection despite the Ayrshire club bringing in pitch covers earlier in the week.

The postponement may solve a problem for the Scottish Football Association after Portuguese match officials returned home shortly after arriving in Glasgow to cover for striking referees.

The game had been due to be refereed by Christian Lautier. He and his three Maltese colleagues are also due to cover Sunday's ALBA Challenge Cup final. They could perhaps find themselves at Easter Road after a four-man Portuguese team pulled out of the SFA's contingency plans.

Cosme Machado had been due to take charge of Hibernian's Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash against St Johnstone on Saturday and Joao Ferreira the Motherwell-Hearts game on Sunday.

All SPL clubs have been assured their games will go ahead despite the late withdrawal of the Portuguese refs, who got back on a plane shortly after arriving at Glasgow Airport. The SFA, who also secured the promise of help from Malta, Luxembourg and Israel, have yet to reveal the new appointments for Hibs and Motherwell.

Luxembourg's Alain Hamer, who sent off Gary Caldwell during Scotland's 4-0 World Cup qualifying defeat by Norway last year, will take charge of Celtic`s clash against Inverness on Saturday. He and his two assistants from Luxembourg will then cover Rangers' trip to Dundee United on Sunday.

Israel's Meir Levy is due to referee Hamilton's home game against St Mirren along with two assistants from his country. Another three-man Israeli team, led by Eli Hacmon, will officiate in Kilmarnock's clash against Aberdeen.

Three Scots will also be involved in SPL action in the capacity of fourth officials. Stephen Allan will patrol the technical area at Celtic Park, Stuart Macaulay will be on duty at New Douglas Park and Andy Tait will be on the touchline at Tannadice.

All three are listed in the SFA's category three specialist assistant referees.
