Smokies on fire

Arbroath continued their impressive start to the season with a 3-1 win over Airdrie.

The hosts went ahead after just six minutes when Kieran McAnespie slotted home from striker Steven Doris' cross.

Airdrie had plenty of possession but rarely threatened Darren Hill's goal as their moves broke down in the final third.

The Smokies doubled their lead in the second half as Doris headed home from Gavin Swankie's inswinging corner.

Airdrie responded immediately with their first notable effort on goal, Graeme Owens curling a free-kick into the bottom corner in the 65th minute.

But Arbroath reasserted their authority in the 90th minute as Swankie's long-range goal, his fifth in four games, ensured his side remained top of Division Two.
