Airdrie are to become the latest Scottish club to turn to an artificial pitch in a bid to reduce the number of postponements at the Excelsior Stadium.

Work will begin on Monday to install a Fifa Grade 2 Standard third generation surface at the ground in time for the start of next season.

The club said on their official website, www.airdrieunitedfc.com: "The new pitch will allow far greater use and limit the amount of postponements that the existing pitch is susceptible too."

Like many of their Scottish Football League counterparts, Airdrie were forced to postpone a number of games in 2009/10 as a result of one of the harshest winters in decades.

The club are following in the footsteps of Alloa, Montrose and Stenhousemuir by having their pitch converted from grass to a synthetic surface.
