League One Review - April 21st
Here's our review of the League One action as the finishing line draws ever closer.
Charlton Athletic claimed the League One title with a 2-1 over Wycombe Wanderers at The Valley. Kermorgant gave the Addicks the lead in the 14th minute, with Beavon levelling in the 45th minute. The title was confirmed when Stephens bagged the winner in the 74th minute. The Chairboys are still 3 points short of safety with 2 matches left. Charlton Athletic 1st, Wycombe Wanderers 21st.
Could Sheffield United be about to miss out on an automatic promotion place following a 1-0 defeat against Franchise FC at Stadium:Franchise as Smith netted the winner in the 16th minute. Franchise FC 4th, Sheffield United 2nd.
Sheffield Wednesday could be about profit from Sheffield United's turmoil as they managed to see Carlisle United off 2-1 at Hillsborough. Lines gave the Owls the lead in the 26th minute, with Berrett levelling in the 82nd minute. The Owls closed in an automatic promotion place when Antonio netted the winner in the 95th minute. Sheffield Wednesday 3rd, Carlisle United 8th.
Huddersfield Town managed to net a 1-0 win over Scunthorpe United at the Galpharm as Novak netted the only goal in the 89th minute. Huddersfield Town 5th, Scunthorpe United 17th.
Stevenage Borough are back in the play-off places following a 2-1 win over Brentford at Broadhall Way, taking advatage of others slipping up. Reid and Freeman helped Borough to a 2-0 lead with strikes in the 52nd and 61st minutes, leaving Saunders to net a consolation in the 90th minute. Stevenage Borough 6th, Brentford 9th.
The play-off ambitions of Notts County were dealt a blow when Bury rolled in to Meadow Lane. Worrall gave the Shakers the lead in the 42nd minute, with Coke putting past his own keeper as the Magpies levelled in the 46th minute. Grella then netted a brace for Bury in the 49th & 67th minutes. Edwards pulled one back for County in the 79th minute, leaving Carrington to take the score to 4-2 with a 4th strike for the visitors in the 93rd minute. Notts County 7th, Bury 12th.
AFC Bournemouth and Colchester United played out a dull 1-1 draw at Dean Court. MacDonald gave the Cherries the lead in the 11th minute, with Eastman levelling in the 84th minute. AFC Bournemouth 13th, Colchester United 10th.
Tranmere Rovers and Hartlepool United also played out an end of season 1-1 draw at Prenton Park. Welsh gave Rovers the lead in the 40th minute, with Sweeney levelling in the 69th minute. Tranmere Rovers 11th, Hartlepool United 14th.
Oldham Athletic limped over the line to safety following a 1-1 draw against Preston North End at Boundary Park. Simpson gave the Latics the lead in the 69th minute, with Holroyd levelling in the 79th minute. Oldham Athletic 18th, Preston North End 15th.
Yeovil Town limped over the line too with a 2-2 draw at Brisbane Road against Leyton Orient. A Lisbie brace in the 23rd and 73rd minute gave the O's the hope of safety, only to see hopes of safety drift away when Williams and Obika salvaged a point with goals in the 82nd and 93rd minutes. The draw leaves the O's with a bit more work to do before they are safe. Leyton Orient 19th, Yeovil Town 16th.
Any hopes Walsall had of confirming their League One survival were dashed by Exeter City who did their best to drag the Saddlers down with them to League Two despite Nicholls giving the visitors the lead on the half hour. Nardiello restored parity in the 50th minute, with Cuvelier restoring the Saddlers advantage 5 minutes later. Hopes of clinging to 3 points were given a blow when Smith saw red for the Saddlers, allowing a Gow brace (69th and 77th minutes) and Sercombe (88th min) to turn the game around for the Grecians. Exeter City 23rd, Walsall 20th.
Chesterfield live to fight another day as they managed to claim a vital 3-points against already relegated Rochdale at the b2Net Stadium. Akpa Akpro gave Dale the lead in the 73rd minute, only to see Boden and Whitaker turn the game around with strikes in the 81st and 86th minutes. The win leaves the Spirites 4 points short of safety, with an inferior goal difference and 2 matches left (Yeovil (a) and Brentford (h)). Chesterfield 22nd, Rochdale 24th.
