Ex-Cherries midfielder Webb joins Hamworthy United

FORMER Cherries prospect George Webb has joined Hamworthy United citing the club's ambition and progress under Simon Browne as key factors in his decision. The goalscoring midfielder this week opted to quit Bournemouth Poppies in favour of the County Ground and will bolster Browne's resources as Hammers look to cement their place in the Wessex League's top five. Since Browne took the reins, Hamworthy have been transformed from Premier Division strugglers to potential challengers, with their eyes on eventual elevation to the Southern League. Webb, who netted 10 goals in 18 league starts for Poppies this term, dropped into the non-league ranks after being released by Cherries in October 2009, following a nine-year spell at Dean Court which culminated in a first-team debut at the end of the 2008-09 season. He is now eagerly awaiting the next chapter in his footballing career after Browne made a move for him. The 19-year-old told the Echo: I was happy at Poppies and I want to thank them and |Kenny Vaughan for everything they've done for me they've been great. But Simon's a young manager, it's a young team and it looks like they are moving forward and I'd like to be a part of it. It was going well at Poppies and it's nothing to do with that, but it looks like Hamworthy are on a good promotion run. If we can aim for promotion and I can be a part of it, it would be brilliant. Webb is now an estate agent in Penn Hill but is using the rise of Josh McQuoid and Charlie Austin as reasons to not lose hope of climbing back up the footballing ladder. He added: I'm grateful to Poppies and what they have done for me. But at the same time, I'm really looking forward to the challenge of a different environment and, hopefully, moving on to the next league. Seeing Josh go up as far he has and Charlie and how well he has done, you have to keep believing it could happen to anyone. Webb has also played for Southern League outfit Gosport Borough since his Dean Court departure.
