Cherries: Wiggins vowing to chip in with more
RHOYS Wiggins bagged his first career goal to help Cherries maintain their impressive start in League One and then emphasised the importance of keeping clean sheets. Wiggins, a summer signing from Norwich, netted with a rasping left-foot strike to put the finishing touches to Cherries' emphatic 3-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday. The defender, a target for the Daggers last season, also provided the assists as Josh McQuoid added to a Scott Doe own goal to give Cherries a 2-0 interval lead. Wiggins said: We've had a tough start to the season and I don't think too many people expected us to get the results we have. But we've got to maintain it and can't get carried away. We're the top scorers in the league and, if we can keep clean sheets, it will give us confidence because we know we're capable of scoring goals. It's going to be vital to keep it tight at the back. We conceded sloppy goals against Notts County and Huddersfield and have to get that out of our system if we're going to have a good season. If we defend like we did against Dagenham, we will have a great chance. Wiggins added: We've got some tough fixtures coming up but are third in the table so couldn't have asked for a much better start. It was great to get my first goal. My first touch wasn't the best but, as soon as the ball sat up, I thought I would hit it and see what happened. Fortunately, it went in the bottom corner. Hopefully, I can chip in with a few more this season. Victory came just days after Cherries boss Eddie Howe had turned down the chance to succeed Alan Pardew as manager of struggling Southampton. Wiggins said: Eddie was a major part in why I signed here. I'm grateful he is staying and hopefully we can have a good season now. Howe was understandably reluctant to discuss the situation when asked by the BBC's Andrew Hawes whether he was concerned the speculation over his future may have affected the players. We haven't talked about anything, said Howe. It's just been business as usual.
