Cherries: Hollands hoping to play a part
Published : 10 Aug 2010 07:00:00
DANNY Hollands is keen to continue his remarkable comeback by helping Cherries pull off a Carling Cup giant-killing. The midfielder returned to action at Charlton on Saturday just 11 days after having surgery to cure a double hernia. Hollands was instrumental in Cherries' vastly improved second-half showing at the Valley after coming on for the final 22 minutes. And providing he suffers no adverse reaction, the 23-year-old is hoping to be in contention for a start when Cherries' meet Southampton tonight. Hollands told the Daily Echo: I did the rehabilitation and, fortunately for me, I have felt pretty good. I trained for the first time on Friday and, although it was a shock to be on the bench on Saturday, I was just grateful to be back. Physically, I feel fine. I know I need to catch up on some training because I missed a week-and-a-half and am behind everyone else. The main thing is that I am going in the right direction. I hope to be involved in the cup game and want to compete for my place, as long as things go okay. Hollands, who also made a rapid recovery from hernia surgery in 2007, added: Southampton is going to be another tough game for us. There is a lot of interest in the game and some people are saying it is probably our biggest of the season. For us, it is no bigger than any other game. We will prepare correctly and look to get through to the next round. I have lived on the south coast since I was 13 so I know there is rivalry between the clubs. I've got friends who are Southampton and Portsmouth fans so it's quite a big deal. Portsmouth fans want us to beat Southampton and Southampton want to beat us. I know a few of the Southampton lads so, hopefully, I can take part. I know we haven't played them competitively for quite a long time. It's a big game, it's a derby and bragging rights are at stake. We're going to make sure we're ready for it and, hopefully, we can put on a performance and progress.
