Cherries: Bartley not interested in performances

MARVIN Bartley is adamant the significance of points over performances has been highlighted for Cherries in the past six days. Bartley says the proof came as Eddie Howe's men followed up their dominant but fruitless showing at Lincoln by claiming victory over Hereford with a less impressive display. The midfielder, who again deputised in defence against the Imps and the Bulls, will be hoping to help Cherries land the spoils when they host relegated Darlington tomorrow (3pm). He told the Daily Echo: I would take points before performances all day long. I would rather be a team that gets points on the board than one that performs week in, week out and doesn't get anything for it. It's a points business. We performed better at Lincoln than we did against Hereford but had nothing to show for our display. We ground out the three points against Hereford and, at this stage of the season, that's all that matters. We just need to keep chipping away at the points and try to reach our target. Although a few of the teams around us have slipped up, it is in our own hands. Regardless of what anybody else does, we just need to concentrate on ourselves. Bartley has grown in stature this season and turned in a series of excellent individual displays as Cherries have managed to sustain their bid for promotion against a backdrop of financial difficulties and off-field uncertainty. He added: I always felt we had a good chance to win promotion. Although the squad is small and we had the embargo, there is a lot of quality here. Nobody has whinged or moaned about anything and we have maintained our challenge through hard work. Meanwhile, Bartley this week laid claim to one of the more curious bookings of the season when he was yellow carded for taking an impromptu toilet break during the win over Hereford. And he saw the funny side after being cautioned for leaving the field of play without the permission of referee Steven Cook. It was worth it because I was bursting! joked Bartley. I ran over to the linesman and told him I needed to go to the toilet while Brett was taking the penalty. He said it would be fine. But as I was about to come back on, the fourth official told me I was going to get booked. I asked the ref why he was booking me and he said it was for leaving the pitch to go to the toilet. I asked him if he had wanted me to go on the pitch and he said I should have let him know. I would have been very disappointed if I had got another booking and been sent off. I can look back and laugh now but I'm sure the manager won't be laughing if I do it again so I have got to learn from it.
