AFC Wimbledon 2-3 Bristol Rovers: Match Report

Virgo spot on for Rovers Adam Virgo's 85th-minute penalty gave Bristol Rovers a 3-2 win and wrecked AFC Wimbledon's historic first match in the Football League. Early strikes from Scott McGleish and Matt Harrold put the Pirates 2-0 up and in total control after just 20 minutes. The Dons fashioned a spirited response which saw skipper Jamie Stuart pull a goal back after 39 minutes before substitute Charles Ademeno hit an equaliser with 22 minutes remaining.

Yet Stuart handled inside his own area in the 85th minute and Virgo did the rest with a perfect spot-kick into the top corner. Rovers led in the 17th minute when McGleish collected a pass from Matthew Gill and swept a fine shot into the corner. McGleish, who joined Rovers on a free transfer in the summer after being released from Leyton Orient, then crossed for Harrold to head home. Yet Stuart headed the Dons back into contention from Samuel Hatton's free-kick and Ademeno then slid home a neat equaliser - before Stuart's indiscretion was ruthlessly punished by Virgo.
