Matty Taylor penalty gives Northampton late win at AFC Wimbledon

Matty Taylor kept his cool from 12 yards to earn Northampton a late 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon after a scrappy League One contest at Kingsmeadow.

Taylor's spot-kick, awarded for Chris Robertson's handball four minutes from full-time, delivered the Cobblers their first away win of 2017 and moves them closer to safety, while keeping the Dons 13th.

Luke Williams sent an early shot wide and Tom Soares did likewise for the hosts but both sides lacked the quality to break the other down in a sluggish first half.

Wimbledon made most of the running but it was their visitors who came closest with Taylor's free-kick sailing over and Michael Smith's first-time shot curling narrowly wide.

A more open second half saw James Shea beat away Taylor's free-kick and Adam Smith keep out a header from Darius Charles.

Just as it seemed these two would play out their second 0-0 draw of the season, a needless handball from Robertson presented the visitors with the chance to win it, and Taylor made no mistake.
