Two Review - May 1st
Here's the round up of the League Two action on the penultimate weekend of the regular season. Notts County reaffirmed their place at the top of League Two as worthy Champions with a comprehensive 5-0 mauling of Cheltenham Town at Meadow Lane. Lee (21st min), Hughes (22nd and 31st min) and Davies (25th min) put the result beyond doubt in the first half, with Rodgers adding to the scoreline in the 81st min. Notts County 1st, Cheltenham Town 21st. AFC Bournemouth rounded off their home campaign in front of their biggest crowd of the season (9055) as they saw off play-off hopefuls Port Vale at Dean Court with their biggest win of the season. Pitman netted for the Cherries in the 53rd minute with Connell scoring a brace in the 76th and 81st minutes, leaving McQuoid to glance home the 4th goal in the 86th minute. AFC Bournemouth 2nd, Port Vale 9th. Having claimed Rochdale their place in League One for the first time since stone age, seem to be slipping as they went down 2-1 at Spotland to Burton Albion, who arrested their recent slide. Taylor (62nd min) and a Harrad penalty (66th min) set the win up, with O'Grady scoring what proved to be a consolation with 11 minutes to go. Rochdale 3rd, Burton Albion 14th. Rotherham United claimed a play-off place with a 0-0 draw with Crewe Alexandra at The Don Valley Stadium. Rotherham United 4th, Crewe Alexandra 18th. Aldershot Town are finishing the season strongly, in time for the play-offs, as they claimed 3-points against Lincoln City at The Recreation Ground. Somma had given the Imps the lead in the 57th minute, only to see M Morgan net a brace (69th and 75th mins), which came either side of a D Morgan goal in the 73rd min. Aldershot Town 5th, Lincoln City 20th. Morecambe still have some work to do to ensure a play-off place even though they managed to hole off Shrewsbury Town at The New Meadow to win 3-2. Duffy and Artell have the Shrimpers a 2-goal lead with goals in the 9th and 15th minutes, with the Shrews hitting back through Van den Broek and Bradshaw in the 33rd and 48th minutes. The winner came from Artell in the 62nd minute, leaving Morecambe needing a point to claim a play-off place and Shrewsbury wondering what might have been this season. Shrewsbury Town 12th, Morecambe 6th. Dagenham & Redbridge have a great chance of making the play-offs following a 2-1 win over Hereford United at Victoria Road. Benson gave the Daggers the lead in the 35th minute, with Pugh levelling in the 62nd minute. The winner came in the 1st minute of added time when Montgomery scored the winner for the home side. Dagenham & Redbridge 7th, Hereford United 17th. Bury were left licking their wounds after Torquay United plundered Gigg Lane with a 3-0 win. Carayol (37th min), Stevens (88th min) and Rendell (91st min) left the home wide reeling. Bury 8th, Torquay United 16th. Chesterfield aren't looking like the play-off contenders they were a few weeks ago. Their cause was not helped with a 2-0 defeat by Accrington Stanley at Livingstone Road. A brace from Kee in the 70th and 88th minutes left the Spirites with much to do on the final day and dependent on others slipping up. Accrington Stanley 13th, Chesterfield 10th. Northampton Town seem to have peaked too early in their quest to make the play-offs, going down 2-0 against Bradford City at Valley Parade. An Evans brace in the 12th and 81st minutes was enough for the Bantams to finish their disappointing season on a high in front of their home crowd. Bradford City 15th, Northampton Town 11th. Despite their return to the Conference, Darlington managed to claim their 5th away win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Macclesfield at Moss Rose. Miller (9th min) and Smith (79th min) claimed 3-points for Darlo. Macclesfield 19th, Darlington 24th. Grimsby Town and Barnet mat at Blundell Park in a key relegation 6-pointer, with the home side picking up 3-vital points in a 2-0 win. Atkinson put the home side ahead in the 59th minute, with Hudson putting the result beyond doubt in the 93rd minute. The win leaves Grimsby a point shy of safety (and Barnet) at the foot of the table with just next weekends matches to save things. Grimsby Town 23rd, Barnet 22nd.
