League One Review - Nov 17th

The top of League One get that bit more conjested as the number of points separating the top half reduced on a day dominated by a sack full of goals.

Tranmere Rovers got the weekend started with a televised match with Franchise FC at Prenton Park. Gleeson scored the only goal of the game for the Franchise holders in the 87th minute. Tranmere Rovers 1st, Franchise FC 4th.

Sheffield United wiped the floor with Stevenage Borough at Bramhall Lane as the Yorkshire side ran off with a 4-1 win. Collins gave the Blades the lead in the 19th minute, with Roberts levelling on the stroke of half time. The second period belonged to the home side as a brace from Miller (55th and 70th mins) and a strike from Porter sealed the win. Sheffield United 2nd, Stevenage Borough 5th.

Swindon Town also notched up a 4-1 win, theirs coming over near neighbours Yeovil Town at The County Ground. Williams got the Robins off the mark with a 24th minute strike which was added to by Collins 4 minutes later. Hayter pulled one back for the Glovers 4 minutes before the break, but saw the 2-goal margin restored by Ward in the 43rd minute. Collins rounded off a good day at the office with a 93rd minute strike. Swindon Town 3rd, Yeovil Town 12th.

Crawley Town lost ground by unexpectedly dropping 2-points as they were held by Walsall. Brandy gave the Saddlers the lead in the 14th minute, with Clarke levelling 8 minutes later. Hemmings gave the Saddlers hope of a win with a goal in the 74th minute, only to be denied when Forte levelled in the 81st minute. Crawley Town 6th, Walsall 17th.

Notts County twice had to come from ebhind to salvage a point against improving Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park. Ribeiro gave Scunny the lead in the 13th minute, with Hughes (Lee) levelling in the 34th minute. Mozika restored the home sides advantage with a goal in first half stoppage time. Hughes completed a brace with an 82nd minute leveller. Scunthorpe United 22nd, Notts County 7th.

Doncaster Rovers managed to get back to winning ways with a win over managerless Portsmouth at Fratton Park. The only goal of the game came in the 25th minute when Hume found the back of the net in a match dominated by Portsmouth chances. Portsmouth 19th, Doncaster Rovers 8th.

Brentford and Preston North End faced each other at Griffin Park as both looked to bridge the gap to the play-off places, but denied each other in a 1-1 draw. Laird gave the Bees the lead in the 62nd minute, only to see German level for PNE in the 89th minute. Brentford 9th, Preston North End 10th.

AFC Bournemouth continued their recent fine run of form with a convincing 4-1 win over Oldham Athletic at Dean Court. Grabban gabbed a hat-trick with goals in the 53rd, 54th and 71st minutes, with Daniels bagging a spectacular header in the 81st minute, leaving Smith with the task of netting a consolation in the 86th minute. AFC Bournemouth 11th, Oldham Athletic 21st.

If there's anything consistent with Colchester United it's their inconsistency! This week ColU managed a 2-0 win over Bury at their Community Stadium as Wordsworth (56th min) and Sears (61st min) bagged the goals to seal the win. Colchester United 13th, Bury 23rd.

In a local(ish) derby, Shrewsbury Town managed to restore some local pride with a 1-0 win over Crewe Alexandra at the New Meadow. Summerfield scored the only goal of the game in the 43rd minute. Shrewsbury Town 20th, Crewe Alexandra 14th.

We finish on two convincing away wins . the first coming at Brunton Park where Leyton Orient recorded a fine 4-1 win over Carlisle United. Despite Murphy levelling for United in the 25th minute after Murphy's 18th minute opener, the side from east London ran riot with goals from Chorley (26th min), Cook (38th min) and Mooney (41st min). Carlisle United 18th, Leyton Orient 15th.

The biggest win of the day came at Victoria Road where Hartlepool United were taken to the cleaners by Coventry City who walked away with the points following a 5-0 win! Goals from Baker (51st & 59th mins), McGoldrick (58th min pen), Moussa (75th min) and Barton (78th min) blew United away in the second period. Hartlepool United 24th, Coventry City 16th.
