League One Review - Jan 1st
Here's our round up of the New Year action around League One. Brighton & Hove Albion got back to winning ways with a thumping 5-0 win over hapless Leyton Orient at Withdean. Murray got the Seagulls off the mark with a 29th minute strike, which was following 2 minutes later when the O's keeper, Jones, turned the ball in to his own net. Murray completed his hat trick in the 50th and 60th minutes, with Barnes rounding off the rout in the 73rd minute to keep the Sussex side on course for automatic promotion. Brighton & Hove Albion 1st, Leyton Orient 19th. South Coast Club snuk up in to the automatic promotion places with a 4-0 demolition of Exeter City at St Mary's. Guly netted a brace in the 19th and 51st minutes, which was added to by Lallana (66th min) and Barnard (92nd min). South Coast Club 2nd, Exeter City 13th. Colchester United and Charlton Athletic shared 6-goals in a 3-3 draw at the U's Community Stadium. Heath gave the Essex side the lead in the 16th minute, with Jackson levelling from the penalty spot 2 minutes later. Bond gave re-established the home sides' lead in the 24th minute, only to see Jackson level from the penalty spot, again, in the 40th minute. Wordsworth gave the U's the lead for the 3rd time in the 64th minute, with the SE London side coming back again through Benson in the 76th minute. Colchester United 10th, Charlton Athletic 3rd. AFC Bournemouth ended their run of 3 straight defeats to claim their first away League win since August with a 2-1 win over Swindon Town at the County Ground. Pugh gave the Cherries the lead from the penalty spot in the 12th minute, with Ritchie levelling 9 minutes later. Pearce scored the winner with 10 minutes to go. Swindon Town 18th, AFC Bournemouth 4th. Huddersfield Town were pegged back to a 2-2 draw at Brunton Park against Carlisle United. Clarke and Arfield gave the Yorkshire side a 2-goal lead with strikes in the 23rd and 63rd minutes, only to see the umbrian side hit back through Zoko (71st min) and Chester (82nd min) to salvage a point. Carlisle United 14th, Huddersfield Town 6th. In form Hartlepool United at on the edge of the play-off places following a 4-2 win over Oldham Athletic at Victoria Park, even though Stephens gave the Latics the lead in the 18th minute. Austin levelled in the 27th minute, from the penalty spot, with Hartley edging the home side in to a 2-1 lead on the stroke of half time. Humphrey's & Sweeney extended the lead after the break with strikes in the 58th and 69th minutes, leaving Mvoto to score a consolation in the 81st minute. Hartlepool United 7th, Oldham Athletic 12th. Franchise FC compounded the woes of Bristol Rovers at Stadium:Franchise as the locals ran out 2-0 winners over the Pirates. Powell (10th min) and Leven (13th min) netted 2 quick goals leaving Rovers in the drop-zone. Franchise FC 8th, Bristol Rovers 21st. Brentford left Dagenham & Redbridge licking their wounds at Griffin Park as the home side netted a late winner to seal a 2-1 win. Simpson gave the Bees the lead in the 10th minute, with Vindelot levelling in the 34th minute. Alexander scored the winner with 3 minutes to spare. Brentford 9th, Dagenham & Redbridge 22nd. Hapless Walsall had no answer to Notts County at Bescot as County ran off with a 3-0 win. Westcarr got County off the mark in the 9th minute, which was added to by Miller (16th minute) and Pearce 11 minutes after the re start. Walsall 24th, Notts County 16th. Rochdale edged out Tranmere Rovers at Spotland as Dale secured their 4th home win of the season. A Jones penalty gave Dale the lead in the 26th minute, with Labadie levelling in the 42nd minute. Parity was short lived as Jones scored again 2 minutes later. Moore levelled from the penalty spot for Rovers in the 81st minute only to see Grant score the winner in the 84th minute. Rochdale 17th, Tranmere Rovers 20th. The only other game played saw Plymouth Argyle (15th) draw 0-0 with Yeovil Town (23rd) at Home Park. The game between Sheffield Wednesday (5th) and Peterborough United (11th) was postponed due to safety reasons.
