League One Review - Dec 17th

Here's our weekly round up of the action around League One ahead of the busy Christmas/New Year schedule.

Charlton Athletic had to settle for a share of the spoils against Oldham Athletic at The Valley. Russell gave the Addicks the lead in the 60th minute, with Morais levelling for the Latics with 6 minutes left on the clock. Charlton Athletic 1st, Oldham Athletic 13th.

Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town managed to share 8-goals in a thriller at Hillsborough. Rhodes raced the Terriers in to a 2-goal lead with strikes in the 12th and 16th minutes, with R Jones and Johnson hitting back with 2 quick strikes of their own in the 26th and 28th minutes. Marshall and O'Grady switched it round to give the Owls a 2-goal cushion with strikes of their own in the 63rd and 74th minutes. Rhodes completed his hat-trick in the 77th minute to reduce the deficit. Then in the 7th minute of added time, Rhodes struck again to level the scores at 4-4! Sheffield Wednesday 2nd, Huddersfield Town 4th.

Sheffield United benefitted from 2 own goals at Dean Court against AFC Bournemouth as the Blades recorded their 6th consecutve win. OGs from Barrett (4th min) and Cook (77th min) brought to an end the Cherries mini-revival. AFC Bournemouth 16th, Sheffield United 3rd.

In the evening kick-off, managerless Preston North End managed to record a 1-0 win over Franchise FC at Stadium:Franchise. Parry scored the only goal of the game in the 7th minute. Franchise FC 5th, Preston North End 10th.

Brentford had settle for a point against Bury at Gigg Lane. Alexander gave the Bees the lead from the penalty spot in the 61st minute only to see J-Lewis levelling with 5 minutes left. Bury 12th, Brentford 6th.

Carlisle United left it very late against struggling Wycombe Wanderers at Brunton Park to claim a point, even though Loy gave the home side a 2nd minute lead. McNamee (28th min) and Trotta (36th min) turned the game around before the break for the Chairboys. Zoko salvaged a point for the Cumbrians with 4 minutes left on the clock, to break Wycombe hearts. A win for the visitors would have lifted them out of the drop zone at the expense of Scunny. Carlisle United 7th, Wycombe Wanderers 23rd.

Stevenage Borough continued their good start to life in the 3rd tier with a 2-1 win over Tranmere Rovers at Broadhall Lane. Beardsley (38th min) and Roberts (84th min) put the game beyond doubt, leaving Labadie the simple task of scoring a consolation in the 93rd minute. Stevenage Borough 8th, Tranmere Rovers 15th.

Despite a dreadful start to the season, Leyton Orient continue to make progress up League One, with their latest success coming against Notts County at Meadow Lane. Dawson (44th min) and Tehoue (85th min) only drew response from Lee Hughes in the 85th minute. Notts County 9th, Leyton Orient 17th.

Colchester United heaped more woe on to Hartlepool United as Wordsworth netted the only goal in the 36th minute to condemn Pool to their 7th home defeat of the season. Hartlepool United 14th, Colchester United 11th.

Stugglers Chesterfield and Walsall limped to a 1-1 draw at the b2Net Stadium. Nicholls gave the Saddlers the lead in the 29th minute, but with the full time whistle moments away, Lester popped up with a 90th minute leveller leaving both to ponder life in the drop-zone going in to the crucial Christmas break. Chesterfield 24th, Walsall 21st.

The games involving Exeter City (18th) and Scunthorpe United (20th) at St James's Park, also Rochdale (22nd) and Yeovil Town (19th) at Spotland, both finished 0-0.
