Cherries: New club captain Cummings has eyes on promotion

WARREN Cummings has set his sights on helping Cherries claim back-to-back promotions after being appointed club captain.[LNB] Cummings has been handed the position by new management team Lee Bradbury and Steve Fletcher, the latter relinquishing the role following his appointment as assistant.[LNB] The 30-year-old is the club's 20th all-time leading appearance-maker and was handed a new 18-month contract by former boss Eddie Howe in January.[LNB] Cummings has played a key role in two promotions since joining Cherries in 2003 and now wants to complete the hat-trick by helping them into the Championship.[LNB] I was honoured and privileged to be asked, said Cummings. It is a responsible position to take on and, hopefully, I can do the title proud.[LNB] I know the management team will be looking for the senior players to show a good example, which has always been the case. We've got a great group and they don't need much guidance because they are very professional.[LNB] I know it will be impossible to step into Fletch's shoes as club captain. He always did everything he was asked with great pride and to the best of his ability and, hopefully, I will take that on.[LNB] Cummings, who deputised for the injured Rhoys Wiggins at Plymouth and could again start against Swindon tonight, added: We've got a fantastic opportunity to achieve something this season and it is one we've got to take with both hands because they don't come along too often.[LNB] It's another big game. We played well at Swindon on New Year's Day but no two games are ever the same, as we saw at Plymouth on Saturday. We probably should have beaten Plymouth by seven or eight goals when we played them here but were fortunate to beat them on Saturday.[LNB] But we worked hard to earn our luck, even though they fully deserved something out of the game. We can't take anything for granted just because we won at Swindon last month. We will need to put in as much hard work to stand a chance of beating them again.[LNB] Fletcher was appointed club captain for the second time by former boss Eddie Howe a year ago. He also held the post under Sean O'Driscoll.[LNB] He said: Both myself and Bradders agreed Warren would be the right man for the job.[LNB] He knows the club like the back of his hand and has been a great help to myself and Bradders. He has been there for us to bounce ideas off and was also a help to Eddie and Jason when they were in charge.[LNB]
