Cherries: My finest finish says Feeney

Cherries' matchwinner Liam Feeney described his Whaddon Road wonder goal as the best of my career so far.[LNB] Feeney ended a personal four-month goal drought when he netted to help Cherries see off League Two strugglers Cheltenham Town yesterday.[LNB] His Boxing Day stunner earned Eddie Howe's charges a rather fortuitous 1-0 win and saw them close the gap on leaders Rochdale to just five points.[LNB] It was the 22-year-old winger's fifth goal in 42 appearances for Cherries following his move from non-league Salisbury almost a year ago.[LNB] Feeney said: I can't think of one to rival it so it was definitely the best goal of my career so far. I was buzzing when it went in and buzzing that is got us the three points.[LNB] It was a tough game especially after losing 5-0 in our last game. I think it showed in our performance that we were a little bit nervy at times. But we were resolute in our defending and, thankfully, got the three points.[LNB] Feeney, who ran the length of the pitch to celebrate his goal with 796 travelling supporters, added: It had been a long time coming and they have been great with me this season. I just wanted to repay them and thank them.[LNB] As an attacking player, it does start to play on your mind when you go a while without a goal. You are judged on assists and goals and it had been four months. I was glad to get it out of the way and, hopefully, a few more will follow now.[LNB] Feeney beat Cheltenham goalkeeper Scott Brown all ends up, his curling left-foot effort nestling in the top corner after 57 minutes.[LNB] It was some quick thinking by Joe Partington that put me in, said Feeney. He saw me running down the line and found me with his throw.[LNB] I had a little bit of good fortune off the defender but was quite confident when I cut inside. I knew what I was going to do and, thankfully, it went in.[LNB] It was a bit like my goal against Rochdale last season. I was pretty confident the keeper wasn't going to save it when I hit it and was really pleased to see it go in.[LNB] Cherries boss Eddie Howe said: It was a great result for us and a mixed bag of a performance.[LNB] We didn't play well in the first half and in parts of the second. But we defended excellently, fought for our lives and put bodies on the line. Our goalkeeper made some good saves but we never really clicked into gear.[LNB] Feeney's strike ruined Cheltenham boss Mark Yates's first game in charge of the Robins.[LNB] The former Kidderminster Harriers boss said: Bournemouth are a good team. They scored a wonder goal and did what they had to do.[LNB] Sometimes, you think you could have done better and our defender said he could have done. But he bent it in the top corner and it was an excellent goal.[LNB] I always knew what a good player he was when he was at Salisbury and I tried to sign him.[LNB] Howe is hoping both Lee Bradbury (food poisoning) and Anton Robinson (back) will be in contention for tomorrow's League Two showdown with Torquay at Dean Court (3pm).[LNB]
