Cherries: Howe tips Fletch for another season

Cherries boss Eddie Howe hailed the professionalism of role model Steve Fletcher and then tipped the veteran targetman to extend his career beyond this season.[LNB] Fletcher, Cherries' record appearance-maker, has been a major player since rejoining the club last January from Crawley Town.[LNB] His performances this season have helped put Cherries in the League Two promotion mix and he has turned in a series of impressive recent displays, including a match-winning effort at Crewe.[LNB] When asked about the club captain, Howe was quick to sing his praises.[LNB] The Cherries manager told the Echo: He brings so much to the team.[LNB] I just think his attitude is so refreshing. For someone of his age to have the appetite and desire to want to be successful and to make the sacrifices needed, I think he's been a great example for the younger players to look at.[LNB] And he's been a great role model for everyone to look and see that when they get to that age they still want to be playing. And it's only his desire and professionalism that have managed to make that happen.[LNB] When asked how long he felt the 37-year-old could extend his career for, Howe said: I think he can play on. A lot will depend on injuries, like with any player. We are thankful we had a chance to rest him mid-season and I think he's benefiting from that now. I think he can go on for at least another year and keep assessing it as each year ticks by.[LNB] Howe added: I think what Fletch realises is that it won't last forever and he wants to make the most of every moment and every game.[LNB] It's that determination to make the most of every moment that I think we can all learn from. He doesn't want to waste a second and possibly he's been more effective since he's come back, purely down to that motivation.[LNB] Meanwhile, Howe believes Notts County will continue to be one of Cherries' major promotion rivals, despite recent off-field events at Meadow Lane.[LNB] Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson resigned as Notts County director of football on Thursday following the club's takeover by Ray Trew.[LNB] When asked whether the takeover could affect the team, Howe said: No, I don't think so.[LNB] A lot will depend on keeping their players, which I'm sure they will.[LNB] They're a good team and they have got a very good squad. As long as they keep them together and intact, they are going to be a real threat.[LNB] ¢ Don't forget to join the Daily Echo reporting team for our up-to-the-minute matchday blog as Cherries continue their bid for promotion.
