Cherries: Howe the gent has nothing to be sorry for

15 January 2011 07:00
EDDIE Howe had nothing to apologise for.[LNB] He brought down the curtain on his momentous reign as Cherries manager with a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Colchester last night.[LNB] And after presiding over his 100th game in the hot-seat, it was apparent the circumstances of his departure to Burnley had been playing on his mind.[LNB] Sections of the club's supporter base had been angered by Howe's decision to up sticks just days after he had turned down offers from Crystal Palace and Charlton.[LNB] The previous two years of unprecedented success against all the odds were quickly forgotten as Howe was painted as the villain of the peace by some.[LNB] Rescuing Cherries from non-league oblivion and then masterminding a memorable promotion campaign had sufficiently embellished Howe's CV for other clubs to come calling.[LNB] He looked uncomfortable as he was ushered in front of the media at a shambolic press conference at Dean Court on Tuesday. It had not been his choice to face the glare.[LNB] Although Howe said he would be staying, he did not put a time frame on it. Perhaps he should have just said he had rejected the offers and left it at that.[LNB] And when news of Burnley's approach was revealed exclusively by the Daily Echo less than 48 hours later, how they came for him.[LNB] He probably knew they would, but you could sense it had hurt him badly. In the eyes of some, he had gone from legend to leper in the blink of an eye.[LNB] It was spiteful treatment of an honourable gentleman who had served the club so diligently both as player and manager.[LNB] He had nothing to apologise for but the fact he did spoke volumes.[LNB]
