Cherries: Howe receives a Palace calling

CHAMPIONSHIP strugglers Crystal Palace are believed to be lining up Eddie Howe to be their new manager.[LNB] The south London outfit is already understood to have been given permission to speak to Howe regarding their vacant manager's post.[LNB] Sources close to the Daily Echo claim a formal approach was made yesterday with the Cherries board reluctantly granting Palace's request.[LNB] As the Echo went to print last night, we had been unable to contact either Howe or Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell to verify the rumour.[LNB] Howe is now expected to have talks with Palace officials before deciding whether he feels the position would be right for him at this stage of his career.[LNB] Palace are thought to have turned their attentions to the 33-year-old after dismissing George Burley following their New Year's Day defeat by Millwall.[LNB] Howe, who is six months into a three-year contract with Cherries, was last week installed as one of the favourites to take over at Burnley.[LNB] However, the rumour mill yesterday switched its focus to Palace when Howe was backed off the boards to become the Eagles' new boss.[LNB] Steve Coppell, who has had four spells as Palace boss, has also been linked with the job, as has former Newcastle manager Chris Hughton and Dougie Freedman.[LNB] Howe has worked wonders in his first management post at Dean Court, saving Cherries from relegation in his first season and then getting them promoted in his second. He has already rejected overtures from Peterborough and Southampton but could find the lure of the Championship too great to turn down.[LNB] Cherries are likely to demand sizeable compensation should Howe leave.[LNB]
