Cherries: Howe 'on brink' of Clarets switch

14 January 2011 07:00
EDDIE Howe is tonight set to take charge of his 100th and possibly last game as Cherries manager.[LNB] The Cherries boss is understood to be on the verge of completing a move to Burnley and he could be unveiled as the new Clarets manager over the weekend.[LNB] Having rejected switches to Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic on Tuesday, the Howe saga took another twist yesterday as chairman Eddie Mitchell confirmed Burnley had lodged an official approach for the 33-year-old.[LNB] Daily Echo sources suggest compensation issues between the two clubs, a potential stumbling block according to reports in Lancashire last night, have been resolved, which would pave the way for Howe and assistant manager Jason Tindall to move to Turf Moor.[LNB] Howe boarded the team coach to Colchester last night after both Tindall and Mitchell said the coveted Dean Court chief would be at the helm for this evening's Sky-televised clash.[LNB] He looked to have ended speculation over his future by declining offers from Palace and Charlton earlier this week.[LNB] But as revealed exclusively on the Daily Echo website yesterday morning, Burnley made a formal move for him as they continued their search for Brian Laws's successor.[LNB] Howe, who is six months into a three-year contract with Cherries, yesterday tasked Tindall with facing the media at the weekly pre-match press call and he gave little away.[LNB] Mitchell, meanwhile, revealed that Burnley had come in for Howe but insisted the manager and his assistant had not held talks with the Clarets, before adding that he would not block them from doing so.[LNB] Mitchell told the Echo: As a club, we can't stop people phoning us, that's the first thing. As much as we would like to, we can't. Somebody phoned us and it was Burnley, and that's as far as it has got at the moment telephone conversations.[LNB] The chairman added: Of course I want him to stay. I've spent hours on this and it's becoming a bit of a headache.[LNB] I can't say any more than I've said and that is that we want him to stay here, and we're going to do our utmost to make sure that happens.[LNB] I'm doing my best for the club, I'm in the position I'm in and that's what I'm duty bound to do. But there's only a limited amount you can do with somebody else's life. I certainly don't want to risk being responsible for pushing Eddie in one direction or another.[LNB] In a statement issued yesterday, Burnley chairman Barry Kilby said: Burnley Football Club is still in discussions with several parties with regard to the managerial vacancy at Turf Moor.[LNB] Howe could reveal more information after tonight's clash at Colchester after he confirmed he would talk to the media following the League One match.[LNB]
