Cherries: Hall-of-famer Pitman targets Hayter haul

BRETT Pitman is keen to follow in the goalscoring footsteps of predecessor James Hayter after his rapid entry into the AFC Bournemouth hall of fame.[LNB] Pitman is currently 30th alongside Wade Elliott and Frank Fidler in the clubs all-time record league goalscorers charts after totalling 31 in 60 starts and 71 substitute appearances.[LNB] And while he concedes his knowledge of top two Ronnie Eyre and Ted MacDougall is limited, the 21-year-old says he is full of admiration for third-placed Hayter.[LNB] Pitman, who recently penned a new three-year deal with Cherries, has plenty of ground to make up on Hayter (94 goals) and MacDougall (119), while Eyre (202) is probably out of reach.[LNB] Hayts is someone I look up to, said Pitman. He scored goals at both this level and the level above and is now doing it for Doncaster in the Championship. He is definitely someone to aspire to.[LNB] I loved playing alongside him when he was here and learned a great deal from him. I still speak to him and he has definitely helped me come on as a player.[LNB] He followed a similar path to me while he was here. He came through the youth ranks and took a while to break into the first team.[LNB] I would love to think I could score as many as he did for Bournemouth.[LNB] Ive heard stories about Ted MacDougall and, by all accounts, he was a very good player. But he was scoring goals a little bit before I came to Bournemouth![LNB] Pitman, who took his career goal tally to 33 when he netted in the JPT against Yeovil in midweek, added: You set out with good intentions but I dont keep records.[LNB] I would love to move up the list as far as I can. The higher I go, the better it would be for the team.[LNB] Its always nice to score and I think the one in midweek had been coming.[LNB] Ive hit the woodwork a few times recently and also had a few saved. Scoring was great |but winning was more important.[LNB] The goal against Yeovil came straight off the training ground. We had practised it in the morning so it was nice to see it go in. Weve done it a few times and I know it hasnt always come off![LNB] Despite Cherries dearth of bodies due to the clubs ongoing transfer embargo, Pitman believes the squad is using the situation to its advantage.[LNB] I think our form has been excellent, he said. Although we had a slip at Northampton, we deserved something out of that game.[LNB] Were a tight squad and everyone gets on. We all work hard for each other and maybe bringing in too many people would affect that, I dont know.[LNB] You only had to look at our bench in midweek to see we could definitely do with one or two more bodies. But were going to have to go with what weve got and thats the hand weve been dealt. We wont let it affect us and will keep pushing on.[LNB]
