Cherries: Fletch says there is more to come

STEVE Fletcher fired Cherries to their best start to a season for 28 years and then claimed: We can still do a lot better. Fletchers late header earned Eddie Howes men a 2-1 win at Torquay to take them joint top of the League Two table. It also saw Cherries rack up five league wins from their opening six games for the first time since 1981 when the club went on to gain promotion from the bottom tier. Fletcher grabbed his first goal of the season just three minutes from time after Brett Pitmans opener had been cancelled out by Gulls defender Chris Todd. The 37-year-old striker told the Daily Echo: We probably werent at our best but its the sign of a good team if you can grind out a result when you arent firing on all cylinders. If were going to have any chance of winning promotion this season, were going to have to do that again because we probably wont play well every week. I still dont think weve played anywhere near our full potential yet but we were resolute and strong when we needed to be. We didnt play particularly well at Northampton a couple of weeks ago and got punished. We used that as a reminder and made sure it didnt happen again. We know we can play a lot better but its good to have a winning mentality. Fletcher became the fourth different player in the past five league games to bag the winner when he powered home a Liam Feeney cross in the closing stages. Feeney had also provided the assist for Pitman to nod Cherries in front before Todd who was told on Thursday he was in remission after being diagnosed with leukaemia levelled midway through the second half. Fletcher added: Weve got matchwinners all over the pitch and that is a massive bonus. The goals arent just coming from one or two people, they are coming from everybody. We have continued the belief from last season and carried on the momentum. You just hope you get a little bit of luck along the way and maybe we had some of that on Saturday. Cherries will visit League Two rivals Northampton Town in the second round of the Johnstones Paint Trophy next month. Skipper Danny Hollands will continue his comeback from injury when he lines up in Cherries Football Combination clash against Forest Green Rovers at Dean Court today (2pm).
