Cherries: Feeney is a fast learner
HOT prospect Liam Feeney has made a rapid rise from Conference player to potential League Two star and he hopes more hard graft can help him justify his big billing.
The exciting winger was named by the Independent as one of 10 Football League stars to watch ahead of the new season alongside the likes of Cardiff Citys Joe Ledley and Adam Johnson of Middlesbrough.
And Feeney did not disappoint on the opening day, producing a fine performance in Cherries 3-0 victory at much-fancied Bury.
But asked about his personal aims for the campaign ahead, he remains level-headed. He told the Echo: My main aim is to try to keep my place in the team and try to contribute as much as I can with some assists and some goals as well.
The 22-year-old, who joined Cherries from Salisbury in January, proved he knows where the net is at the back end of last season, scoring three times as Cherries avoided the drop.
And now he is an established member of Eddie Howes side, he is looking forward to the test of facing another of the promotion favourites in Rotherham at Dean Court this afternoon (3pm).
I feel good, said Feeney. I feel Im contributing quite well to the team so things are going quite well for me, but the most important thing is that the team is winning and hopefully we can continue where we left off last Saturday.
Rotherham will be another tough game but I think all the games in this league are going to be tough.
They did really well last season with their points deduction and they are expected to be up there, so I expect a really tough game.
They are a good side and beat Derby the other night, so we all know what to expect and hopefully well be ready for them.
Feeney admits he took some time to settle at Dean Court following his move from Salisbury, but now that he has, Cherries appear to have a fine player in their ranks.
Its weird when you go to a new club and you have to get to know everyone all the players, the staff and the club, said Feeney.
It took me maybe a month to get used to it but once I settled in the lads have been great to me and so have the management so I feel fine now.
Ive moved down here now so Im completely settled and focused on my football.
And when asked about that big recommendation in the national media, the young winger is hoping to earn further plaudits.
I got a phone call about it, he revealed.
Its good to be noticed and it cant be a bad thing, so Ive just got to keep trying to work hard to make sure those things keep coming.
