Cherries: Fans haven't forgotten Spicer comments

JOHN Spicer could be forced to run the gauntlet of some unforgiving Cherries supporters when he returns to Dean Court with Notts County tomorrow.[LNB] The midfielder, who netted eight goals in 50 appearances for the Dorset outfit, hardly endeared himself to Cherries fans after he left to join Burnley in August 2005.[LNB] In one of his first interviews, Spicer angered a section of Cherries supporters with some ill-advised comments.[LNB] Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph in September 2005, he said: It's all set up like a proper football club here. No disrespect to Bournemouth, but Burnley is a proper stadium and they have a proper training ground.[LNB] Spicer, who joined Cherries for £10,000 from Arsenal following a spell on loan, spent three years at Burnley before reuniting with former Dean Court boss Sean O'Driscoll at Doncaster in 2008.[LNB] He joined Notts County following his release by Doncaster in the summer and has featured in the Magpies' first three league games of the season.[LNB] Contacted earlier this week by the Daily Echo to preview his first visit to Dean Court since he left, Spicer politely declined our invitation to be interviewed.[LNB] However, it would seem that if he thought his disparaging comments had been forgotten by Cherries fans, the 26-year-old could be in for a surprise when he steps out at Dean Court.[LNB] Season ticket holder Steve Brown told the Daily Echo: Spicer is going to receive an extremely hostile reception after he belittled our proud club and insulted everybody associated with it. He will certainly be aware of the fans' feelings towards him every time he touches the ball. I just hope it doesn't fire him up too much.[LNB] And Dave Jennings of AFCB Vital, an unofficial supporters' website, added: "I would imagine he will get a mixed response.[LNB] Those that remember his comments when he left will no doubt be more vocal, while others might not remember him and will wonder what all the fuss is about.[LNB]
