CHERRIES: ED'S TROOPS STIR THE SHAKERS

08 August 2009 16:55
RAMPANT Cherries turned on the style to claim their first opening-day victory for 10 years and how.[LNB] First-half goals from Brett Pitman and Anton Robinson paved the way for an emphatic win over last seasons beaten play-off semi-finalists.[LNB] And Mark Molesleys second-half stunner put the gloss on an outstanding display from Eddie Howes men against one of the favourites to again feature in the League Two shake-up.[LNB] Defender Scott Guyett was drafted in for his first start since January after Ryan Garry had failed a late fitness test on a dead leg.[LNB] And Steve Fletcher made his 600th appearance for Cherries, the 37-year-old striker preferred up front to Jeff Goulding who was on the bench.[LNB] Burys Ryan Lowe, a summer signing from Chester, carved out the first shooting chance after just 30 seconds, although his strike flashed well wide.[LNB] Liam Feeney then showed David Buchanan a clean pair of heels down the right flank, only to drill his cross straight into the arms of Bury goalkeeper Wayne Brown.[LNB] Bury and their supporters were convinced they had opened the scoring eight minutes in, but Lowes piledriver was ruled out for offside.[LNB] And although referee Eddie Ilderton chose to consult his linesman, the decision stood, even though some home fans thought it had been reversed.[LNB] Pitman broke the deadlock with a stunning 15th-minute goal, which owed as much to the build up as it did to the finish.[LNB] A neat one-touch exchange between Molesley and Sammy Igoe had the Bury defence all at sea before Pitmans strike had them spitting feathers.[LNB] The 21-year-old unleashed an unstoppable right-foot drive from 20 yards, which beat Brown all ends up and flew in off the inside of the upright.[LNB] Bury again looked to the officials for inspiration after Danny Racchis cross had appeared to strike Molesley on the hand inside the box, but again they were left disappointed.[LNB] However, any sense of injustice in the home camp soon evaporated when Cherries had a louder shout for a penalty turned down.[LNB] Another slick interchange of passes between Pitman and Igoe led to the ball finding its way to Fletcher just eight yards from goal. And as the big man prepared to pull the trigger, he was sent sprawling by Stephen Dawsons blatant shove. However, referee Ilderton again thought differently.[LNB] Sodjes last-ditch diving block prevented Igoes snap-shot from testing Brown before Shwan Jalal clutched Lowes glancing header from Brian Barry-Murphys 34th-minute free kick.[LNB] Cherries stunned the hosts when they doubled their lead through Robinson seven minutes before half-time with Howes men rewarded for another outstanding build up.[LNB] Igoe was again at the heart of the move when his sweeping crossfield pass fell invitingly for Pitman at the far post.[LNB] And after he had hooked an inch-perfect, first-time centre into the six-yard box, the Bury defence was conspicuous by its absence as Robinson was left in acres of space to nod the ball past Brown.[LNB] Cherries and their army of vocal followers were in dreamland when Molesley fired them into a 3-0 lead just five minutes into the second half.[LNB] The 28-year-old midfielder latched on to a loose ball just inside the 18-yard box and dispatched a thunderous drive past Brown, which again left the Bury stopper floundering.[LNB] Shell-shocked Bury went in search of a response and Danny Carltons poked wide at the near post after being found by a Michael Jones knockdown.[LNB] And Carlton was inches from turning Dawsons scuffed shot past Jalal as the Cherries goalkeeper was treated to one of his easier afternoons.[LNB] But for a better first touch, substitute Goulding would have made it 4-0 when he beat the offside trap just after replacing Fletcher, only to drag his shot horribly wide.[LNB] Jalal saved comfortably from both Paul Scott and Jones as Bury failed to seriously test the Cherries goalkeeper during the second period, while his handling of crosses was exemplary.[LNB] Cherries: Jalal; Bradbury, Pearce, Guyett (Partington, 74), Cummings; Feeney (Bartley, 79), Molesley, Robinson, Igoe; Pitman, Fletcher (Goulding, 67).[LNB] Unused subs: Connell, McQuoid, Tindall, Pryce (g/k).[LNB] Bury: Brown; Scott, Sodje, Futcher, Buchanan; Racchi (Worrall, 55), Dawson (Johnson, 87), Barry-Murphy, Jones, Lowe (Rouse, 74), Carlton.[LNB] Unused subs: Cresswell, Baker, Belford (g/k).[LNB] Referee: Eddie Ilderton (Tyne and Wear).[LNB] Attendance: 2,998 (including 326 away supporters).[LNB]
