Cherries: Eddie can sign one player

CHAIRMAN Eddie Mitchell has revealed that Cherries have received a timely fillip in their ongoing battle to help boss Eddie Howe bolster his ever-diminishing resources. Howe, who only named a 14-man squad for Saturday’s victory over Burton Albion, has been given the green light by the Football League to make a conditional signing. The dearth of players saw 16-year-old youth teamer Jayden Stockley named among the Cherries substitutes – but only after the club had contacted his school to gain permission for him to be involved. Howe has been told he can bring in a player either on a non-contract basis or an emergency loan, providing their wages do not exceed a weekly cap. Cherries asked for special dispensation after the squad reached breaking point when Mark Molesley and Ryan Garry were added to the casualty list last week. And although the club is still subject to a strict transfer embargo, league chiefs finally agreed to their request late on Friday due to the exceptional circumstances. Although Howe is understood to have made several last-minute enquires for players ahead of Cherries’ clash with Burton, his attempts drew a blank. And while his search will continue, Howe is likely to bide his time and wait for one of his main targets to become available rather than making any rash decisions. His cause was hindered on Friday by the fact clubs were reluctant to release players so late in the day, while a full Football League programme tomorrow is also unlikely to help. Speaking to the Daily Echo last night, Mitchell said: “We have been told we are able to bring in a player on an emergency loan although his wages would need to be around the £500-per-week-mark.” Mitchell also confirmed the club’s attempts to sign a permanent replacement for goalkeeper Ryan Pryce would be discussed at a league board meeting in early October. However, the news was tempered by the publication in the London Gazette on Thursday of the winding-up petition. But Mitchell added: “This week alone, the board has raised around £40,000 on top of this week’s gate receipts. It is obvious now the fans are behind us as the numbers that turned out on Saturday were the second highest in our league and we are so grateful.”
