Cherries: Danny boy seals the points
SKIPPER Danny Hollands bagged the only goal of the game as Cherries got their promotion charge back on track in East Lancashire.
Hollands helped Cherries exorcise the ghost of their previous visit to the Crown Ground when he headed home with 14 minutes remaining.
The 23-year-old, who exchanged words with visiting fans following last season’s 3-0 defeat, was the hero this time around as Cherries ended a four-match winless run.
However, goalkeeper Shwan Jalal also played his part in the victory, with his outstanding late save from a Jimmy Ryan free kick preserving their lead.
Midfielder Mark Molesley was a surprise inclusion in the Cherries starting line-up as boss Eddie Howe made two changes.
Molesley, sidelined for a month by a foot injury, returned along with Lee Bradbury as Anthony Edgar and Marvin Bartley dropped down to the bench.
A scything tackle by Michael Symes on Warren Cummings earned the former Cherries loan man a yellow card and saw Accy boss John Coleman banished to the stands.
Coleman was asked to vacate his seat in the dugout after venting his spleen at referee Michael Oliver and opted to watch from a scaffold tower on the opposite side of the pitch.
The first clear scoring opportunity fell to Cherries when Brett Pitman headed over after Liam Feeney had provided the assist from the right flank.
Stanley responded with Jimmy Ryan’s free kick through a crowd of players snaffled by Cherries goalkeeper Jalal.
Cherries were thankful to Jalal for saving Bobby Grant’s header after the Stanley striker had met a Tom Lees centre five minutes before half-time.
Stanley goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin threw himself full-length to his right to keep put Pitman’s free kick from distance at the start of the second half.
Jalal’s excellent stop denied Symes after 58 minutes, the goalkeeper narrowing the angle and then saving one-handed after the striker had sprung the offside trap.
Referee Oliver then turned down Accy appeals for a penalty after Andrew Procter had gone to ground under a challenge from Anton Robinson.
Hollands broke the deadlock when he glanced home Cummings’s free kick to give Cherries the lead 14 minutes from time.
And it was almost doubled just minutes later when substitute Alan Connell saw his snapshot fly into the grateful arms of Dunbavin.
Pitman squandered a glorious chance to seal the points when he headed wide with the goal at his mercy following Feeney’s deep cross.
And Jalal came to Cherries’ rescue in stoppage time when his breathtaking save from Ryan’s free kick ensured the points headed south.
