Cherries: Calling all fans who wouldn't take a huge pay rise... Anyone?

BOURNEMOUTH or Bermondsey might be a no-brainer for Cherries fans, but how many would turn down a 600 per cent pay rise[LNB] Moreover, how many would turn down a 600 per cent pay rise at the start of a career which, more often than not, doesn't last any longer than 15 years[LNB] Internet abuse directed at both Josh McQuoid and Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell after yesterday's events is well wide of the mark and the inane ramblings of those whose pint pots will always be half empty.[LNB] Six months ago, Josh McQuoid was worth nothing. Nada. Zilch.[LNB] This is a player who only scored his first senior goal in May and who, but for Brett Pitman's departure, would probably be warming the bench.[LNB] Now, after a nosebleed-inducing rise to prominence, AFC Bournemouth has benefited to the tune of six figures from McQuoid's sale to Millwall. Not bad for what has essentially been a few weeks' work and a handful of goals.[LNB] For many supporters, though, what happened yesterday was the end of the world, much like when Take That split up in 1996.[LNB] But fans of Britain's biggest boyband eventually got over it and the always-down-in-the-dumps section of the Dean Court faithful must do the same shed your tears, get some perspective and move on.[LNB] As keen as supporters are to play the loyalty card when it comes to players who move on to pastures new, the facts are simple: One-club players like Steve Fletcher and Matt Le Tissier are things of the past in today's game. Money talks.[LNB] It's not just the colossal cash of the Premier League, either. Players in the Football League, even more so than their millionaire neighbours in the top-flight, need to make money as soon as the chance comes knocking.[LNB] The dream doesn't last forever: Just ask Dean Ashton. If he had showed loyalty' to Crewe Alexandra in 2005, his tragic retirement from the game at the age of 26 would have carried with it a financial as well as professional kick in the teeth.[LNB] As for Mitchell, his only crimes during the McQuoid saga appear to be a loose tongue and some poor timing.[LNB] Fans' calling for his head need to look at the bigger picture. And quickly, before the paint on the MITCHELL OUT banners dries.[LNB] The phrase no player is bigger than the club' is frequently thrown around and surely Cherries fans would prefer the sale of an asset (and not even their biggest) to trudging down a financial tunnel into darkness.[LNB] Just look at Take That: Life got even better for them even without their big draw.[LNB]
