Championship Review - Oct 1

01 October 2013 22:39
Here's our look at the midweek action around the Championship.

With QPR out of action, due to Wigan Athletic's involvement in the Europa League, it presented an opportunity to Burnley to rise to the summit with a 2-0 win over Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium. Goals from Vokes, on the stroke of half time, and an own goal from Jones in the 87th minute, sealed the win for the Clarets. Doncaster Rovers 18th, Burnley 1st.

Leicester City couldn't quite make it in to the automatic promotion places, despite a 2-1 win over Yeovil Town at Huish Park despite Dyer (54th min) and a Nugent penalty (63rd min) giving the Foxes a 2-goal lead. Hayter popped up with a consolation penalty in the 84th minute to bag a consolation. Yeovil Town 22nd, Leicester City 3rd.

Nottingham Forest had to be content with a point in SE London against Charlton Athletic at The Valley despite taking an early lead through Reid in the 3rd minute. Sordell bagged the equaliser for the Addicks 5 minutes in to the second period. Charlton Athletic 20th, Nottingham Forest 4th.

Reading will look at a draw against Barnsley as two points dropped as opposed to one gained after Robson-Kanu saw his 51st minute opener cancelled out by an O'Grady leveller in the 79th minute at Oakwell. Barnsley 24th, Reading 5th.

Improving Blackburn Rovers dented Watford's hopes with a narrow 1-0 win at Ewood Park as Rhodes bagged another goal in the 65th minute. Balckburn Rovers 8th, Watford 7th.

Huddersfield Town had to be content with a point against Middlesbrough at The Riverside as the home side failed to register a home win. Vaughan put the Terriers head in the 59th minute, with the home side drawing level in the 79th minute through Gibson. Middlesbrough 19th, Huddersfield Town 9th.

A remarkable game was played out at Pride Park between Derby County and Ipswich Town where the two sides shared 8-goals between them! Berra (7th min) and Murphy (9th min) gave the Suffolk side a great start with Whitbread pegging them back in the 12th minute, only for Cresswell (14th min) and Murphy (again - 34th min) giving what might have looked like an unassailable lead for the Tractorboys at half time. In the second period though, the Rams battled back for a point with goals from Bryson (47th min), Ward (61st min) and Bryson to complete his brace (88th min) to complete a remarkable comeback. Derby County 14th, Ipswich Town 10th.

Leeds United managed to edge out AFC Bournemouth at Elland Road as the home side held on to a 2-1 lead to claim their first win in 5 matches. McCormack gave the home side the lead in the 52nd minute, only to see Grabban level in the 73rd minute. Any hopes of the Cherries taking a point home went when Poleon bagged the winner in the 80th minute. Leeds United 11th, AFC Bournemouth 13th.

Brighton & Hove Albion left it late to grab a point against Sheffield Wednesday at The Amex after the Owls took the lead through Fryatt in the 43rd minute. Andrews bagged the equaliser for the Seagulls in the 89th minute. Brighton & Hove Albion 12th, Sheffield Wednesday 21st.

Birmingham City halted the mini revival Millwall have been having of late as the home side ran out 4-0 winners at St Andrews. A brace for Murphy (19th & 34th mins), plus goals from Adeyemi (68th min) and Lingard (89th min) brought the side from SE London back down to earth with a bump. Birmingham City 17th, Millwall 16th.

The remaining game to be played out came at Bloomfield Road where Blackpool (6th) played out a 0-0 draw with Bolton Wanderers (23rd).
