Championship Review - Aug 31st

Here's our take on the action around the Championship as the first month of the new season is concluded going in to the International break.

Early pace setters Blackpool came up against one of the pre-season favourites, Watford at Bloomfield Road as Ince bagged the only goal of the game in the 81st minute to keep their noses on top. Blackpool 1st, Watford 7th.

Queens Park Rangers rose to the summit for a couple of hours with their lunchtime win over Leeds United at Elland Road as Hill bagged the only goal in the 75th minute. Leeds United 10th, Queens Park Rangers 2nd.

Burnley recorded an empahtic 3-0 win over Derby County at Pride Park as goals from Ings (14th min), Vokes (32nd min) and Shackell (74th min) blew the Rams away. Derby County 14th, Burnley 3rd.

Nottingham Forest lost ground on the leaders with a 2-1 reverse at the KB Stadium against Wigan Athletic despite taking the lead through Reid in the 8th minute. Maloney levelled from the penalty spot in the 14th minute, with Gomez scoring the winner in the 35th minute. Wigan Athletic 8th, Nottingham Forest 4th.

Leicester City also came a cropper against Charlton Athletic, who recorded their first win of the season at The Valley. Morrison gave the Addicks the lead in the 27th minute, with Kermorgant doubling the advantage in the 59th minute. Drinkwater reduced the arrears 3 minutes later, but it wasn't enough to inspire his colleagues to salvage a point. Charlton Athletic 18th, Leicester City 5th.

Two promoted sides came up against each other at the Keepmoat where Doncaster Rovers hosted AFC Bournemouth. The winner came on the half hour when Husband was adjudged to have nudged the ball past his own keeper. Doncaster Rovers 19th, AFC Bournemouth 6th.

A solitary Le Fondre goal in the 77th minute sealed the points for Reading at Huish Park against Yeovil Town. Yeovil Town 22nd, Reading 9th.

Blackburn Rovers blew away near neighbours Bolton Wanderers at Ewood Park as the home side ran away with a 4-1 win. Two quick goals through Dunn and Rhodes in the 27th and 28th minutes set Rovers on their way. Baptiste scored on the stroke of half time only to see Evans (70th min) and Rhodes (83rd min) securing the points. Blackburn Rovers 11th, Bolton Wanderers 24th.

Barnsley were another to bag their first win of the season, with theirs coming at home to Yorkshire neighbours Huddersfield Town at Oakwell. O'Grady (8th min) and Pedersen (32nd min) got the Tykes off to a great start with Vaughan bagging what proved to be a consolation in the 61st minute. Barnsley 20th, Huddersfield Town 12th.

Brighton & Hove Albion left it late to bag a point at The Amex against Millwall after the Lions took the lead in the 51st minute through Woolford. Ulloa bagged the leveller to deny a first win for Millwall in the 89th minute. Brighton & Hove Albion 13th, Millwall 23rd.

Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday cancelled each other out at The Riverside as an Antonio goal for the Owls (35th min) was levelled by Carayol 4 minutes after the restart. Middlesbrough 15th, Sheffield Wednesday 21st.

Birmingham City and Ipswich Town also cancelled each other out with a 1-1 draw at St Andrews. Berra gave the Tractoemen the lead in the 30th minute, with Burke levelling for the Blues in the 76th minute. Birmingham City 17th, Ipswich Town 16th.
