Stanley gain Charlton's support
16 Nov 2009 - 14:12:00
Accrington Stanley's survival has been greeted with delight by former England and Manchester United great Sir Bobby Charlton.
The club came close to being wound up at the High Court having not made a deadline to pay a £308,000 tax bill on October 28 until local businessman and supporter Ilyas Khan stumped up the money to stave off financial ruin.
Speaking to reporters, Charlton said: "If you love football then Accrington Stanley are very important - never mind their results - because they, and many other smaller clubs like them, are the lifeblood of our game.
"But Accrington is a bit more special. The name has a romantic attachment to it. It is vital they have survived."
