Accrington Stanley have been handed a £12,000 fine but have avoided a points dedication following a Football League hearing into the fielding of two ineligible players.
The League Two strugglers could have been docked up to seven points after admitting fielding ineligible players Martin Fearon and Chris McGrail earlier in the season.
Any points deduction would have left Stanley deep in relegation trouble in their first season back in the Football League in 44 years.
However, following the hearing in Preston in which Stanley pleaded mitigating circumstances, the club were handed just a £12,000 fine.
Furthermore, £6,000 of the fine has been suspended.
A club statement read: "Accrington Stanley are satisfied with the outcome of the case.
"We may have been guilty of technicalities that breached regulations, however, we have never sought to cheat or circumvent the rules of the competition or the laws of the game.
"We accept the fine for the breaches and we now look forward to the remaining seven games this season."
