Eight-month ban for Cavanagh

Accrington Stanley defender Peter Cavanagh has been banned for eight months and fined £3,500 after betting on the outcome of a match involving his own team.

The Football Association announced Cavanagh's punishment following an independent regulatory commission hearing.

Last month four other players were banned for betting on a win for Bury in their game against Stanley on May 3 2008, which the Shakers ultimately won 2-0.

Three of the players were with Stanley at the time and the other at Bury.

Regulatory commission chairman Nicholas Stewart QC said of Cavanagh: "These were repeated deliberate breaches of the Football Association's betting rules which are vital to maintain confidence in the integrity of the game.

"These are serious offences by a club captain and therefore must be punished by a substantial period of suspension of eight months together with a fine of £3,500."
