Stanley pull out of JPT
Accrington Stanley have resigned from the Johnstone's Paint Trophy after pleading guilty to a charge of fielding a suspended player in the first round against Tranmere.
Ray Putterill played and scored in the game at Prenton Park, which Stanley won on penalties following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes. Tranmere will now take Accrington's place in the competition, facing Stockport at home in round two.
"It is disappointing," Stanley chief Executive Rob Heys told the club`s official website. "We put in a good performance against the League One side and appeared to have made it through to the next stage of the competition.
"From what we were told the player's last club was Liverpool, however it emerged that this was not the case and Ray had played for a local league side last season and picked up this suspension for an offence while with them.
"It is frustrating but technically we have broken the rules of the competition and so must accept the consequences."
A Football Association hearing relating to Ray Putterill's case will take place next week.
