Karl Sheppards Stanley to win

Accrington grabbed their first away win since January at Roots Hall this afternoon, beating Southend United 1-0.

On-loan Reading forward Karl Sheppard headed home the only goal of the game in the 61st minute.

And that proved to be the visitors' only effort of the entire 90 minutes on target.

Stanley were grateful for the fine form of goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin who pulled of a number of excellent saves.

The first of those came after nine minutes when he palmed out a powerful shot from Ryan Hall before the shot-stopper also did well to deny Michael Timlin and Mark Phillips in the second half.

Gavin Tomlin also had an effort scrambled off the line by Craig Lindfield and that meant Sheppard's looping header, which somehow evaded Blues goalkeeper Cameron Belford, was enough to ensure all three points for Stanley.
