Gornell shines in Stanley success

Terry Gornell was Accrington`s hero as they secured their eighth home win on the trot and moved up to sixth place in League Two following a 3-1 triumph over Southend. Ian Craney gave the Reds the lead in the 10th minute when he headed home Sean McConville's corner. They should have had more with Jimmy Ryan blasting a 30-yard effort against the crossbar. However, they were made to pay after 58 minutes when Ryan Hall rifled a 58th-minute free-kick into the bottom of the net. Joe Jacobson then hit the woodwork again for the Reds before Stanley sealed the game in the last 10 minutes. A Dean Winnard throw was not caught by keeper Glenn Morris and Gornell pounced after 80 minutes to fire home. Then four minutes later striker Gornell was fouled in the area by Bilel Mohsni, who was shown a second yellow card. Phil Edwards kept his cool to slot home his 12th goal of the season and give Stanley a great chance of a promotion spot.
