Crewe 0-0 Accrington Stanley: Report

22 March 2011 22:14
Stanley denied in stalemate Accrington Stanley winger Sean McConville was denied what looked a clear goal as they had to settle for a point after a goalless draw at Crewe. The visitors were stunned when McConville's 13th-minute turn and shot came down off the crossbar and looked to have crossed the line only for linesman Andrew Hutchinson's flag to stay put. Stanley left frustrated after creating the best of the chances over 90 minutes but it was Crewe who started brightest with Clayton Donaldson and Ashley Westwood both having good efforts saved by Alex Cisak before Luke Joyce headed wide at the other end. Terry Gornell then span into the Crewe box and saw his close-range effort saved by Rhys Taylor while Danny Shelley should have put the Alex ahead but Cisak came out on top in their one-on-one. After the break the game swung from end to end as Donaldson drilled over for Crewe and Taylor tipped Andy Proctor's looping header over the bar before Joe Jacobson side-footed McConville's corner over the bar from 12 yards out. Ian Craney went close with a fine strike before referee David Coote waved away Crewe appeals for a penalty after Donaldson went down in the box under a challenge from Jacobson. Taylor produced a superb double stop to keep out Craney's shot and Jimmy Ryan's follow-up header before Artell hacked away on the line after Ryan turned and tried to hammer home at the third attempt. Substitute Rory Boulding almost won it for Stanley when he swivelled in the box but his dragged shot went the wrong side of the post.
