Last-gasp Mirfin lifts Iron

David Mirfin struck a stoppage-time winner as title-chasing Scunthorpe came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Accrington.

The Iron looked dead and buried at the break, but extended their unbeaten run to 15 games thanks to Mirfin's last-gasp heroics.

Lee Molyneux, on loan from Crewe, scored the opener for Accrington in the 18th minute when he slid home George Bowerman's cross.

And it was 2-0 after 37 minutes when Peter Murphy collected a chip from Lawrie Wilson on the edge of the area and his shot took a slight deflection to catch out Scunthorpe goalkeeper Sam Slocombe.

Title hopefuls Iron offered little in the first half and Stanley's big threat was the persistent rain after having their last home game abandoned in the 56th minute.

However visiting boss Russ Wilcox made a double substitution straight after the break.

And it livened the visitors up with top scorer Sam Winnall scoring his 16th goal of the season after getting the ball from Paddy Madden and firing past Marcus Bettinelli four minutes after the restart.

Then in the 58th minute a loose ball in the box came out to substitute Hakeeb Adelakun on the right of the area and he rifled the ball into the far corner to level.

The Iron were then the better side and it required some superb saves from on-loan Fulham goalkeeper Bettinelli, while the crossbar kept out Madden's header.

Then in injury time Gary McSheffery's deep free-kick was headed home by Mirfin for the winner.
