Goals from Ryan Taylor, Shola Ameobi and Peter Lovenkrands ensured Newcastle avoided a Carling Cup second-round upset as they beat Accrington 3-2.

The npower League Two side battled well against their Barclays Premier League opponents and went in level at the break after a wonderful effort from Ray Putterill cancelled out Taylor's equally impressive opener.

But the Magpies moved two goals ahead in the second half thanks to finishes from Ameobi and Lovenkrands before Sean Hessey's late consolation for Stanley.

Fulham enjoyed their own taste of a 6-0 victory as Mark Hughes' men cruised past Port Vale.

Chelsea, Newcastle and Arsenal all hit six in the Barclays Premier League at the weekend and Fulham took advantage of a gulf in class to get in on the act.

Zoltan Gera and Bobby Zamora scored twice each under torrential rain at Craven Cottage and Fulham's new £5million striker Moussa Dembele scored on his full debut for the club before his replacement Clint Dempsey slammed home the sixth.

Jermaine Beckford was on target as Everton hit five to ease into the third round at the expense of 10-man Huddersfield with a 5-1 win.

Beckford's first goal since joining the Toffees from Leeds in the summer made victory certain at Goodison Park after their npower League One opponents had responded to early Marouane Fellaini and Jack Rodwell strikes.

A John Heitinga own goal gave Huddersfield hope at half-time but Beckford's penalty and further efforts from Louis Saha and Leon Osman - after Lee Peltier had been sent off and Heitinga missed from the spot - settled the tie.
