Accrington Stanley take a point after Josh Windass penalty

Josh Windass secured a point from the penalty spot for Accrington in a 1-1 draw with Northampton at the Crown Ground.

The hosts were ruing missed chances early on. They came close in the open stages when Sean McConville's cross from the right found Matt Crooks but he headed over.

Adam Buxton's 20 yard free kick cannoned against the crossbar in the 19th minute and Seamus Conneely headed narrowly wide two minutes later.

It was a real battle with neither side making much headway until the 39th minute when Northampton's top scorer Marc Richards made something out of nothing.

He latched onto a ball forward to the right of the area and clipped it over Jason Mooney from a tight angle for his third goal of the campaign.

However Stanley equalised from the spot 10 minutes after the re-start after Windass was brought down in the area by David Buchanan. The striker stepped up to take the penalty and sent Adam Smith the wrong way for Windass's second of the campaign - both from the spot.

The game then could have gone either way with McConville not far off for Stanley while Richards was clean through but was denied by Mooney's legs on 75 minutes.

Stanley stopper Mooney also kept out Ryan Cresswell and Richards in the latter stages as both mid-table sides had to settle for a point.
