McConville fires Stanley to victory

Sean McConville scored the decisive goal to give Accrington their first victory of the season in a 1-0 win over Mansfield.

The Stags dominated the early possession without causing Accrington goalkeeper Jason Mooney too many problems.

The stopper did rush out of his area and miss a kick but the Stags failed to capitalise while Chris Beardsley also had a go on goal but he scuffed it into Mooney's arms.

Against the run of play, Stanley took the lead in the 33rd minute when wideman McConville got the ball from Piero Mingoia around 25 yards out and, thanks to a deflection, his shot wrong-footed Stags goalkeeper Brian Jensen.

The home side then picked up their game with Josh Windass going close and McConville had a great chance to double the advantage after the break when he nicked the ball off the Stags defence but Jensen kept him out at the near post.

Stanley upped the pressure and Billy Kee raced free but Jensen again blocked the close-range strike while a Seamus Conneely long-range effort skimmed the crossbar.

It was a bad-tempered game with ten yellow cards in total and a melee in the 91st minute had players pushing and shoving each other in angry scenes, although remarkably both sides finished with 11 players.
