Mexes could start for Milan, Ambrosini on bench

Frenchman Philippe Mexes is set to return to AC Milan's starting line up for the Rossoneri's Champions League group opener against Anderlecht later Tuesday, said reports.

Mexes played only 14 league games last season and after a dour Euro 2012 campaign the former Roma man was not picked by France coach Didier Deschamps for a recent friendly against Uruguay.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Mexes is set to line up in central defence with Daniele Bonera, with Luca Antonini and Mattia De Sciglio at left and right back respectively.

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has been under pressure after two home defeats and one away win in three Serie A league games so far, and is desperate to see his side take all three points at the San Siro.

Although there have been conflicting reports about who will line up, most say Allegri will opt for a 4-3-1-2 tactical formation.

Antonio Nocerino and Frenchman Mathieu Flamini are expected to start either side of former Manchester City midfielder Nigel De Jong in a three-man midfield.

German-born Ghanaian Kevin Prince Boateng is set to play his usual number 10 role just behind a reported front two of Giampaolo Pazzini and Dutchman Urby Emanuelson.

If the report is confirmed, it would mean a surprise role as a supporting striker for Emanuelson, who started his career as a left back but has been used by Allegri as an attacking midfielder to good effect.

It means Spain international forward Bojan Krkic and Italian forward Stephan El Sharaway could start on the bench.

Team captain Massimo Ambrosini, meanwhile, could also start from the bench. He came off during the second half against Atalanta with a foot knock.

Midfielder Riccardo Montolivo had been expected to return in time having recently suffered a thigh injury but will not be fit at the earliest until Sunday when Milan face Udinese.
