Young would back McGhee arrival

The Dons have edged closer to naming McGhee as Jimmy Calderwood's successor after receiving permission from Motherwell to hold talks with the Fir Park boss. The 52-year-old emerged as the front runner for the job after reportedly being told by Celtic he was no longer in the running for the Parkhead hotseat at the weekend. Young and his team-mates were shocked by the departure of Calderwood and his assistant Jimmy Nicholl within hours of guiding Aberdeen to fourth place in the SPL and a Europa League spot. And the midfielder believes McGhee - who was a player at Pittodrie between 1978-1984 - would help lift the spirits of the dressing room again. He said: "It will be a good appointment, especially after the amount that was said about the two Jimmys leaving and it being a surprise and everybody being shocked about it. "It will be a good one. It will definitely get the boys in the side up for it again. "It's a bit frustrating that a manager the boys liked is away but there is nothing we can do about it, we just have to get on with it. "Mark McGhee will be a fantastic appointment and I'm pretty sure everybody will get behind him." McGhee led Motherwell to the coveted third spot in the SPL in his first year at Fir Park and Young hopes he will also have a major impact at Aberdeen. He told RedTV: "Motherwell play good football and they have given us a right few good games as well. He obviously knows what he's doing. "I spoke to a few boys who played for Motherwell and they were really impressed by his training and tactics and knowledge of the game. "If it does go through, it looks as though it's going to be a good appointment. "The style of football is pleasing on the eye and I'm pretty sure everybody will be looking forward to that hopefully happening at Aberdeen."
