Young desperate to restore pride

The Dons slumped to their heaviest ever European home defeat in the first leg of the third qualifying round last week, conceding four goals in the last half-hour as the Czechs romped to a 5-1 win. It was the worst possible start to the reign of Pittodrie legend Mark McGhee and meant the visitors will be playing for pride and places in the team at the Andruv Stadium on Thursday evening. Midfielder Young told Red TV: "You cannot get a 5-1 defeat off somebody and not let anybody down. It's not on. "It's just a shame it was the manager's first game but we aim to do right and get a positive result. He added: "We need to go over and perform a hell of a lot better, that's for sure. "It's going to be tough but that's the situation we've put ourselves in. "We need to make it right. We're not expecting to win the tie but I think we can go over there and put on a performance." Asked if the players owed something to the fans, Young said: "I think we owe a performance to ourselves." Last Thursday's match was locked at 1-1 until the floodgates opened in the last 30 minutes. "For a while, it was going quite well," Young insisted. "Then everything just seem to collapse round about us, which was frustrating after putting all the hard work in over the summer. "I think we owe everybody a performance." Young, 29, wants to prove he is ready to perform for 90 minutes ahead of next weekend's Scottish Premier League curtain-raiser against Celtic. McGhee has warned his players they risk the axe if they fail to show up on Thursday night and is now able to back up those words with action having been told he will finally have some money to spend to reinforce the squad. Young has vowed to take full advantage of his chance to impress, saying: "I think it's trying to start the season again in a good way and getting a performance for the whole 90 minutes, not just half an hour, 45 minutes. "We saw the video the other day of the first half hour of the game and we actually played quite well. "There's no way in the world you'd have thought they'd have beaten us 5-1. "But if we can go over there and get a good 90 minutes and a good performance, we'll be extremely happy with that." McGhee travelled to the Czech Republic without a quartet of injured players, with Michael Paton (thigh) joining fellow forward Tommy Wright (calf), defender Zander Diamond (Achilles) and goalkeeper Bertrand Bossu in the Dons' treatment room.
