Whelan has joined former Dons Lee Richardson, Dean Windass and Peter Nicholas in applying for the post following Jimmy Calderwood's exit last weekend. Whelan played under Atkinson at Coventry and he claims the former Manchester United boss is willing to come to the Granite City. He told the Press and Journal: "I've completed my UEFA B licence and I am sitting my UEFA A qualification. "I may not have managerial experience but I believe I can provide Aberdeen with fresh ideas. I have got a team together willing to come with me if I got the job. "One is a former team-mate of mine and Ron is a former Premier League manager with one of the best clubs in the division with a wealth of experience." Former Newcastle manager Ossie Ardiles has also been linked with the post but Motherwell boss Mark McGhee remains the favourite.
