Vernon lifts McGhee

Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee said the performance of striker Scott Vernon was the one positive he could take from his side's 3-1 defeat at Dundee United. The former Colchester United striker scored a terrific volley in his first start for the Dons, but his side were unable to force their way back into the match. McGhee, who was sent to the stand just before the break for kicking the ball away, said: "I was pleased with his all-round performance. "It was a good goal he scored. The problem was we didn't take our chances earlier in the match, before United had scored their first. If we had scored then it could have been us that went 3-0 up but, as we know, goals change games. "It was a combination of ourselves and poor refereeing decisions that conspired to see us 3-0 down. However we did not capitulate after we went three behind in terms of our spirit or attitude. "If we put the first nine minutes behind us, the rest wasn't too bad."
