Paterson: McGhee deserves time

18 March 2010 18:43
Manager McGhee is coming under increasing pressure after overseeing a 10-match winless run that has seen the Dons crash out of the Scottish Cup, as well as leaving their hopes of finishing in the SPL top six hanging by a thread.[LNB]McGhee, who has won just eight of his 34 competitive matches in charge, insists it would be "grossly unfair" were he to be sacked after less than a season in charge.[LNB]Paterson, who played under McGhee at Motherwell and joined Aberdeen on loan from Plymouth at the start of February, told RedMatchday: "Mark's a good manager, no two ways about it and the supporters just need to give him a bit of time and things will come good. He'll get it right.[LNB]"But I'll be honest with you, although Pittodrie is a hard place to come as an opposition team, it's not easy as an Aberdeen player either because it's only when you join that you realise just how huge this club is, what history it has and what you need to live up to.[LNB]"You walk down the corridor to the dressing room and you see the pictures, the players who've been here, the managers, what has been achieved.[LNB]"Living up to that takes a while to get used to and new players need a little time to adjust."[LNB]He added: "The (cup) defeat to Raith was a shocker - we don't need telling that.[LNB]"No disrespect to them but to lose that game and to now see them in the semis of the Scottish Cup, it's such a missed opportunity.[LNB]"I sat with Steve MacLean watching their result with Dundee coming in last Saturday and we were still angry with ourselves that we let that chance slip away from us.[LNB]"We're still kicking ourselves but we can't change it now and we need to have a strong end to the season."[LNB]Paterson's loan deal expires in the summer and he admits he is uncertain whether Plymouth boss Paul Mariner will want him back.[LNB]"I came here to play and we'll see where we are in the summer," the 30-year-old said.[LNB]"My relationship with Paul Mariner at Plymouth is good but after playing a lot at the start of the season, I was missing out because he's been trying different things to try and turn it round there, bringing in a few new faces just to try and get a lift out of them.[LNB]"He knew I wanted some football, and he was good enough to let me come up here and (get) that."[LNB][LNB] Scottish Premier League.
