McGhee to run rule over trialists

Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee will assess a total of six trialists during their weekend friendlies against Fraserburgh and Peterhead.[LNB] Most of the players have been training with the Dons for at least one week and will get a run-out on either Saturday or Sunday.[LNB]McGhee has two left-backs to run the rule over - Wales Under-21 international Grant Basey, who played for Charlton last season, and 25-year-old Robbie Williams, who was released by Huddersfield this summer.[LNB]Midfielder Yoann Folly is also on trial - he worked under Paul Sturrock at Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth - while former West Ham youth player Conor Okus remains at the club.[LNB]Former Carlisle and Darlington left winger Jeff Smith, 30, and Pakistan international Adnan Ahmed, a former Manchester United youth who played for Ferencvaros last season, make up the half dozen.[LNB]McGhee said: "There is no centre-half or centre-forward, which are positions we are looking to fill, so there is still a lot of work to do."[LNB]The Dons boss could yet resurrect his interest in former Carlisle left-back Evan Horwood, who returned to a trial spell with home town club Hartlepool after a short stint training with McGhee.[LNB]McGhee added: "He had already given Hartlepool his promise he would go on their tour to Holland.[LNB]"We got to him quite late, we only started to look at that area when Davide Grassi said he wasn't coming back.[LNB]"He has gone on his tour and we'll wait to see what happens. He had a couple of days up here and seemed to enjoy himself, but we don't know if he's coming back. He might sign for Hartlepool."
