McGhee still eyeing top-six spot

The Dons ended an 11-match winless sequence to move within six points of sixth-placed Hearts with a game in hand.[LNB]McGhee said: "I don't know if there is a belief we can get into the top six but we know, mathematically, the door has not been closed on us today.[LNB]"We have the belief we can win next week after winning today and we will see where that takes us. It is still a long shot but we want to set out to win as many games as we can between now and the end of the season."[LNB]Zander Diamond and Sone Aluko were on target for the Reds with Steven Robb scoring a late consolation for the Buddies.[LNB]McGhee was pleased to end the club's poor run of form and claim their first win since January.[LNB]He said: "It is a weight off the shoulders because we have not been winning but not because of any record as that never entered my conscience.[LNB]"I wanted to win because I thought results elsewhere may have gone in our favour, which they did. Four games ago I thought Hearts would be lucky if they took one point but instead they have beaten Hibs last week, so they have more points than I thought they would have. The run that everyone was talking about wasn't bearing any weight with me."[LNB]The Aberdeen manager was, however, less than happy with referee Brian Winter's decision to show striker Steve MacLean a second yellow card.[LNB]He added: "He went to ground but I thought he got the ball. Before the player had even hit the ground the referee had his hand in his pocket. He seemed awfully enthusiastic about giving the red card and I was disappointed with that."[LNB]St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson admitted his side looked jaded following their previous week's exertions.[LNB]The Buddies had bounced back from last Sunday's Co-operative Insurance Cup final defeat to Rangers by scoring four without reply against Celtic.[LNB]MacPherson said: "I think you could see the effect that those games had on our performance. We lost poor goals. We are normally renowned for the tempo of our game which wasn't there today but there are certainly reasons for that when you look at the games that we have had recently."[LNB]MacPherson was also forced to field several players who were suffering through illness due to a virus that has hit his squad.[LNB]The St Mirren boss added: "John Potter was actually sick in the first 10 minutes of the game, Lee Mair was struggling as was the goalkeeper and one or two others.[LNB]"We could have been sitting here with a point with the chances we created in the last five minutes. We had three really good chances but Jamie Langfield made two great saves and Billy Mehmet has put one just past the post. After Steven Robb got the goal back it gave us the belief we could have got something from the game."[LNB][LNB]
