McGhee: Segers could fill Dons vacancy

Leighton parted company with the Pittodrie side last weekend, with McGhee revealing he wants more of an all-rounder for the role. Motherwell goalkeeping coach Colin Meldrum emerged as the early favourite for the job but Segers, who worked with McGhee at Wolves, is now also in the frame. "Hans Segers would be an option," confirmed McGhee. "I was asked the other day if Colin Meldrum would be an option and of course he is. I've worked with Colin and I know the quality of the guy and I know the variety of use he can bring here. "Hans Segers is the same, Hans is a very good friend of mine. I know I could work with Hans, he is a top goalkeeping coach and he brings all sorts of other skills with him. "I've got to consider every option. I don't know whether Colin Meldrum would be able to come here. I've left this alone until after the Motherwell game. "I don't know whether Hans wants to come here or not, I haven't spoken to Hans about it. "But you can be sure that, after the game on Saturday, we will start to look at these questions more closely." As well as his backroom staff, McGhee is also keen to add to his squad further before the transfer window closes on Tuesday, having recruited Davide Grassi this week. He said: "I'm not expecting any to move out in the sense that we have had no enquiries about anyone and there is nothing pending. "As far as people in, yes, I would absolutely hope for at least one. I think it's unlikely that we would have two because financially we probably can't afford two." McGhee also refused to rule out the prospect of a swap deal, with Derek Young tipped as a possible candidate. He added: "When I was asked the question a couple of weeks ago about whether I was prepared to sell any of my star players, I said it was an option because I had to consider everything, I had to be creative when looking to build a stronger squad. "It's the same with swap deals. It wasn't Derek Young I had specifically in mind, although, not being in the team, he is one who people will put two and two together and come to Derek Young. "If someone out there offers me a player that I think can benefit the squad, then I would consider a swap for a player that I have here." Aberdeen host McGhee's former club Motherwell on Saturday as they bid to build on last week's win over Hamilton. McGhee said: "I'd like to think I would get a warm reception from the Motherwell fans. If you mean am I going to get some sort of caustic reception, I think that's misplaced and unfair. "But there you go, that's football. I'm the manager of Aberdeen now and I'm enjoying that. "I've got a lot of friends at Motherwell and I enjoyed my time there enormously. I still think it was the right thing for me to move at the time I did. "I could have left a year ago twice. I could have tried a bit harder and walked out on Motherwell and got the Scotland job and I could have left and gone to Hearts, which was a fantastic job at the time. "I didn't, I showed loyalty and got them into Europe twice. I sold a lot of players which they needed me to do for a lot of money which has really financed what's happening there now. So I don't think I did a bad job there. "As far as there being an 'edge' is concerned, I don't see it that way. I'm just looking forward to seeing my team again and seeing how they do against a team which I think will be slightly better than Hamilton were last week."
